One of my favorite things to do is READ. Sometimes, I won't get one darn thing done during a day other than read a book. It's like a sickness. A delightfully wonderful sickness.
Sometimes, I might have two or three books going (in different rooms) at the same time.
I love to read.
I just finished reading a memoir by Lois Roelofs called CARING LESSONS.
Some of you might have figured out that I enjoy reading memoirs. I like to hear about other people's lives and learning about their time periods, laughing at their funny stories, gasping with disbelief at things they have experienced, etc.
One of the most interesting things about this book is hearing about the field of nursing. All the study, hours, time, bloodsweatandtears that go into obtaining a nursing degree. But, even more than that, what makes a nurse.
Lois discusses how she learned that nursing is more than performing procedures. It's so much more.
"...it's not necessarily just what we say to people, but how we act: how we listen, how we encourage, how we empathize, and how we show respect..." (from Caring Lessons page 115).
Her thirst for knowledge was fueled by Lois' desire to serve others. The more she knew, the better able she was to help.
This book could have been about my BFF- her life parallels Lois' in a way. They both have remained true to their upbringing to this very day; they are always improving themselves in an effort to better help others; always putting everyone ahead of themselves...
I found Caring Lessons to be a good read!
If you'd like to read Caring Lessons or have a nurse in your family or circle of friends, I've got good news! Lois is giving away a copy to one lucky reader.
WAIT! There's more! I'm going to pass along my copy too!
All you have to do is leave me a comment that you'd like to have a copy and I'll let that random thingy pick the winning numbers! SIMPLE!
Thursdays Favorite Things Hop is where you can link your favorite post to share with old and new followers, or write a post about your favorite things!

Ooh that book sounds interesting .... particularly as I think I would make a crap nurse, so I am interested about what skills are needed! Nice post. I shall bob around some of the blog hops tomorrow!
Annie- Pretty sure I would make a crap nurse too. Saying, "Just get over it" isn't really very caring is it? LOL
